Only 58 percent of motorcycle riders wear their helmets

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters

“We could save, we know, more than 700 lives each year if everybody put a helmet on every time they got on a bike,” Peters said. “But right now, unfortunately, only 58 percent of riders wear their helmets and that rate is 13 percent lower than it was just four years ago.”

New Bridgestone Battlax BT-002 Racing Street Tire Is Z-Rated Ultra-high Performance Radial Designed for Street, Track

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Nashville, Tenn. (Feb. 17, 2007) – Bridgestone Firestone North American Tires is pleased to introduce the new Bridgestone Battlax BT-002 Racing Street, an aggressive Z-speed rated sport tire that performs equally well for aggressive sport riding or track-days. On or off the track, the BT-002 RS demonstrates a balance of stability, cornering, handling, grip, anti-shimmy and shock absorption needed to perform at maximum potential.

Developed from technology gleaned from years of successful MotoGP testing and race participation, the BT-002 RS offers exceptional front-end contact feel and cornering performance. Designed by Bridgestone Corporation to be the ultimate sport bike tire, the front tire was developed with Dual Tread Construction (DTC) – with a medium center compound and soft shoulder compound to ensure high grip, light steering and impressive feedback. Utilizing Bridgestone’s proprietary construction, compounds and patterns, including a newly designed fine cord breaker underneath a mono-spiral belt, the front tire ensures flexibility without sacrificing stability. The rear BT-002 is specifically designed to gain traction.

Designed much like the front tire, the rear tire is also manufactured with a High Tensile Super Penetrated Cord (HTSPC) mono-spiral belt. In addition, the silica rich compound enhances high grip in all conditions and low temperatures, ensuring excellent handling from the moment the motorcycle starts off.

“This introduction has been one of the more exciting developments since our continued experience in MotoGP is now having a direct impact on tires at the dealership level. In just a few short years, we’ve accomplished great strides in this highly competitive arena. Our participation is paying off with tires that can handle the most aggressive conditions,” says Bob Graham, Manager of Motorcycle and Kart Products, BFNT.

The Battlax BT-002 Racing Street is now available in four popular sizes 120/70ZR17, 180/55ZR17, 190/50ZR17 and 190/55ZR17 at dealers nationwide. For more information, please visit www.motorcycle-karttires.com.

trailsource

At TrailSource, you will find epic trails from around the planet! TrailSource is an online adventure guide to trail and travel related information, including guidebooks, maps, weather and lodging.

Behind the scenes, TrailSource is powered by a database of trail destination information. Initiated in 1993 as a manila folder of clippings, copies and notes, the vision was to provide a single-source for travel and exploration of wild areas around the planet by foot, bike, cross country skis and/or snowboard.

To organize the trail descriptions and travel related information, a database was created in 1994 and the accumulation of trail information became a labor of love for many involved. The trail information is an edited compilation from sources such as personal exploration, government publications, maps, regional trail guidebooks, local bike shops and regional websites.

The TrailSource focuses on trails which challenge one’s spirit & resolve while developing a deeper appreciation for the power & unpredictability of Nature. Generally, the trails are over five kilometers with good scenery & wildlife to be observed. The journal entries for each trail may include location, directions, map names, lodging, level of difficulty, season, and sources for additional information.

Due to the volume of requests for hardcopy listings, the TrailSource was printed beginning in the summer of 1997, and sold via this website starting in November 1997. For broader access to this repository, the TrailSource website was relaunched in the Summer of 1998 to provide direct access to the database of trail listings. Along with the trails, book and website links were also added for each region.

In the Winter of 1998, TrailSource was expanded to include Cross-Country Skiing trails.

In the Fall of 1999, the TrailSource website was redesigned again to incorporate weather and location maps.

During the Winter of 1999, the database was expanded to include hiking and snowboarding trails.

Starting in November 2000, the website now includes live daily snow conditions for snowboarding and cross-country ski areas.

In January 2001, the company which manages the website was reformed as TRAILSOURCE.COM, Inc. (a limited liability company in the State of Ohio).

In October 2001, the website was dramatically expanded to incorporate trail maps.

In November 2002, a paid subscription model was setup to require payment to access premium content.

In March 2002, the database was expanded to include snowmobiling, atv riding and horseback riding trails.

“Great website and service!”

Reno-Fernley Raceway (NV)

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

With the interest in road racing spawned from the drags, plans were pushed forward for a paved road course in 2001. It took nearly two years to lay out and complete phase one of the road course. It was a challenging process to layout the infrastructure and install the first 1.2 mile course. With the opening in 2003 the road course saw an influx of car clubs, and sports car enthusiasts. Immediately the course was being talked about as a true drivers course, requiring attention and skill. By mid 2004 Phase 2 had extended the course 2.3 Miles and saw weekends start to fill up as more people heard how this was an exciting and challenging course. Many drivers began touting us as the fastest track in the west. Our 2005 season is the most exciting yet. We have nearly sold out every available weekend and have programs running throughout the week. By mid 2005 we will have added Phase 3, another 2+ miles making it one of the longest road courses in the United States. The road course is host to race and club events by HMSA, NASA, Porsche, Audi and many more sports car clubs and motorcycle groups. It is also host to full time driving and motorcycle licensing schools. Finally this year we will be implementing several new features for the course. New facilities for timing and scoring, as well as registration, also more access and routes for emergency vehicles and personnel. We have expanded the run-outs to more than 60′, and we will be implementing a driver/rider safety program, which will include racing safety. We hope you enjoy your time at the track and continue to come support us as we grow. Let’s go Racing.

From Reno:
Take Interstate 80 East 30 miles to Fernley Exit 46.
Turn right of the off-ramp and follow the road to 95A (at the stop light) and take a right.
The track will be 5 miles down on the right.

From Carson Tahoe Area:
Take Highway 50 East from Carson City.
Follow 50 to Silver Springs.
Turn Left on 95A.
The track will be 10 miles down the road on the left.

Miller Motorsports Park (UT)

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

OVERVIEW

The design philosophy of Miller Motorsports Park has led to the creation of a national standard for road racing and karting which is equal or superior to any existing North American facility, and which attracts a high level of enthusiast participation by competitors and non-competitors alike. Miller Motorsports Park features exceptional corporate facilities designed to attract sponsors and corporate involvement in a wide range of activities, both on and off the track.

From the outset, Miller Motorsports Park has been conceived as a major national road race event center intended to attract premier racing events to Utah and the greater Salt Lake market.

THE RACE TRACK

The road course is a 4.5 mile long, 40-50 foot wide, 24-turn layout that provides a variety of cornering speeds, from 50 mph to well over 100 mph. The fastest cars and motorcycles will approach 200 miles per hour on the track’s 50 foot wide, 3500 foot main straight.

The course has four possible configurations. The 2.24 mile East course is a highly technical challenge suited to lower-powered, better-handling cars and motorcycles, while the 2.2 mile West course is fitting for higher-powered, larger cars and motorcycles.

The East course has as many as seven major overtaking areas, and 14 corners, including the three-turn esses, which have significant elevation changes. The feature corner on the East course is the final turn, a 50 foot-wide, 9º banked sweeper that leads onto the main straight. It is designed to create last-minute overtaking challenges before the race to the finish line.

The West course is notable for a sequence of three very fast (100 mph+) corners which lead to the heaviest-braking and slowest corner on the track, turn W5, whose 45 foot-wide entrance encourages overtaking. The rest of the West course features several multiple-radius and complex corners designed to challenge drivers’ skills.

Miller Motorsports Park’s longest configuration, the Full course, has a character completely different from either of the two shorter layouts. In this 4.5 mile configuration, speeds will be extremely high both at the end of the long main straight and through the daunting sequence of turns that comprise the first elements of the East side of the course, where cornering speeds will approach 150 mph.

A fourth configuration, the 3.06 Outer course, eliminates the entire infield section and promises to be one of the fastest track layouts in North America.

While the track is basically flat, Miller Motorsports Park ’s designers have incorporated several significant elevation changes in order to add character, challenge, and unparalleled sightlines for spectators.

The combination of potential layouts, each with its own distinct characteristics, enables Miller Motorsports Park to provide challenges for drivers and riders of all skill levels while simultaneously providing spectators exceptional race action.

SPECTATOR FACILITIES

Miller Motorsports Park is unique in that it offers spectators almost 100% sightlines of the entire track from any viewing location, while providing up-close viewing of prime race action zones. This is possible because of the inherently level nature of the property which has enabled Miller Motorsports Park to locate spectators around the perimeter of the course while ensuring that the track layout brings major overtaking and action zones close to spectator areas.

Six different spectator areas, known as Oases, are prime viewing areas where features such as raised spectator banks, grandstands, restrooms, concessions, catering, nearby parking, and other amenities are located. These Oases are linked by roadways that provide access to each other and to the Paddock and Expo area, and are also connected by pathways that follow most of the track’s perimeter.

PADDOCK FACILITIES

Miller Motorsports Park will hit the ground racing in 2006 with what might be the highest level competitor and support facilities of any road course in North America today.

On the east side of the property, just off Sheep Lane , competitors arrive at the Main Entrance and register at the Welcome Center, which is part of the Museum, Retail, and Security Center complex.

After passing through the main gate, competitors see the Maintenance facility to the right. Directly ahead are the first of two 40-bay Day Garages, and a full service Kart Retail and Service Center . To the left, stretching 800 feet along the East Pit Lane , are the 27-bay Formula One style Grand Prix Garages. Also visible is a feature image of the park: a three story Race Control Tower.

Further into the 22-acre paved paddock, located close to the main straight, is a combination Medical/Restroom/Concession center. On the north side of the Paddock is a swipe-card operated gas station, a wash bay, and the Team Garage complex. Team Garages are available for rent to teams and individuals on a long-term basis as a location for workshops, car and motorcycle storage, or even as a facility from which to operate a motorsports related business.

Two additional Race Control buildings serve the West course and Kart Circuit.

The Paddock is extensively wired to provide power for a large number of competitors, and has perhaps the largest number of permanent, high quality restrooms of any race facility in the nation. Additionally, the Paddock has several classrooms and other multiple-use facilities.

CORPORATE AND MEMBER FACILITIES

The most spectacular, and certainly the most significant building at Miller Motorsports Park is the 22,000 square foot Clubhouse Building, located on a hill overlooking the final turn before the main straight. This three story facility offers almost 100% views of the entire track, and sits directly above the sweeping final corner complex. Surrounded by nearly five acres of prime viewing embankment, Clubhouse Members enjoy exceptional viewing, privileged access, and exclusive food, service and entertainment opportunities unique to American motorsports.

The Clubhouse Building comprises a Members-only main floor with lounge, cafeteria, catering facility, meeting room, restrooms, wireless internet access, business center, and a large open-plan exhibition hall which opens directly onto the viewing banks.

The third floor Executive Level, complete with an expansive deck, is reserved for Miller Motorsports Park’s Executive Club Members.

The Miller Motorsports Park Clubhouse is intended for use year round, and its Members enjoy access to all events, as well as the opportunity to participate in a wide range of enthusiast-centered activities. The Clubhouse is also used during the week as the main corporate entertainment center at Miller Motorsports Park.

Easily accessible to all spectators, paddock participants, and corporate guests, a large corporate hospitality and exhibition area is located between the Paddock and the Clubhouse. Guests will also be accommodated in tented suites located on the roof of the Grand Prix Garages.

THE KART COMPLEX

Miller Motorsports Park incorporates one of the most spectacular kart road course facilities in North America. At 0.89 miles, with a main straight approaching 900 feet in length and 30 feet in width, the track is one of the fastest in the nation, yet it still has a wide range of different speed corners. This track’s subtle elevation changes and multiple configurations make it perfect for all classes of racing. It is a center for major corporate and rental kart activities, and can be used for car solo competition (autocrosses), for driver training, and for manufacturer ride-and-drive activities. Also, it has been designed to serve as a motorcycle riding and race-training course, and incorporates dirt loops for Super-Moto action.

The kart facility is located so that it can operate simultaneously with almost any road course event, and where it serves corporate and spectator needs during major events.

LOCATION

Miller Motorsports Park is situated adjacent to Tooele County’s Deseret Peak Recreation Complex. It is within 35 minutes of downtown Salt Lake, 25 minutes from Salt Lake City International Airport , and about ten minutes from Tooele or Grantsville. Miller Motorsports Park is easily accessed by major highways (I-80), and surrounding county roads. Click here for directions.

SUMMARY

Miller Motorsports Park is a significant addition to the national road racing world, and welcomes drivers, riders, and spectators of all levels of national car and motorcycle road race events. As such, it is a major component of the ever growing Salt Lake City sporting market.

Thunderhill Park, Willows, CA

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Thunderhill is one of the only tracks in the west that allows us to experience racing the way it was before concrete walls and guardrails. Thunderhill is situated in the rolling hills of the north central valley and has lots of run off area. It has never been a spectator track so there has never been the need to for walls or fences.

If you are traveling North from Sacramento or the Bay Area, please take Interstate 5 North to the main Willows exit. Go left over the freeway and proceed West 7 miles to the track entrance on the right. Ducati’s New 1098

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

The 1098 immediately strikes you with its purposeful, no-nonsense attitude. Performance is first and foremost in every detail.

Trademark Ducati features like the high tail section and compact front-end meld with twin under-seat silencers and single-sided swingarm to express its aerodynamics and agility. Add the new Testastretta Evoluzione engine at the heart of the machine and you get an all-out performance Ducati Superbike that seems to be moving fast, even when at rest.

The 1098 introduces a number of ‘firsts’ for Ducati and production sport bike design. The 1098 is the first production motorcycle to have the amazing stopping power of Brembo Monobloc brakes, the first to have a data acquisition system integrated as standard equipment and the first to use an ingenious construction method for its weight-saving single-sided swingarm. More ‘firsts’ for a road-going Ducati include the direct application of MotoGP technology, like the power producing GP6-derived elliptical throttle bodies and the use of the information-rich instrumentation originally developed for the new Desmosedici GP7.

The 1098 has the soul of a race bike, pure and simple. The riding position encourages the rider to mould to the sleek lines of the tank and seat: man and machine are made one. It transmits the quality and character of contact between road surface and tyre, it signals the way the chassis will react next and responds instinctively to rider commands.
